The
Lake Superior Marine Museum Association was recently
awarded the prestigious regional Chief of Engineers
Excellence in Interpretive Partnership Award for
2002. Lt. Colonel Thomas Magness, Commander of the
Army Corps of Engineers Detroit District, presented
the award to LSMMA president Bruce VonRiedel at the
Corps' Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center in
Duluth. Col. Magness said "I wish to recognize the
Lake Superior Marine Museum Association for the
tremendous support it has provided to our staff at
the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center for more
than 29 years. This is the oldest continuing
cooperating association within the Corps of
Engineers." Magness further congratulated VonRiedel,
the members of the Association and staff at the
Maritime Center for a collaborative effort that has
set the standard for Corps of Engineers' cooperating
associations.
In
commenting on the award, Lake Superior Maritime
Visitor Center Director Thomas Holden said,
“Congratulations are in order to all of our
Association members past and present, to the Board
members for their diligence, to Ralph Knowlton for
his undaunted efforts to get the visitor center
built and opened back in 1973, and especially to
former Visitor Center Director C. Patrick Labadie
for whom we all owe a great deal of the success of
the Association and the Visitor Center. This is an
honor that cannot be shared enough with everyone who
has supported this partnership.”
The Association has
recently undertaken the support of the five-year
Lewis &Clarke Exhibition and program series and the
restoration of the magnificent 5th Order Fresnel
lighthouse lens now on display in the Maritime
Center. Their long term commitments include the
funding and support of Gales of November, a forum
for presenting research and diving projects on Lake
Superior, The Evening Program Lecture Series, the
Cruise of a Lifetime Fundraiser, and the publication
of the Nor'Easter a Lake Superior history journal.
