2:00 – 4:00pm – Behind-the-scenes tour of the Great Lakes Aquarium – 353 Harbor Drive, Duluth, MN
Join Jay Walker, the Assistant Director of the Great Lakes Aquarium, and members of his staff, for a special guided tour to learn how the northern Minnesota aquarium operates including water purification and treatment as well as animal food preparation and daily maintenance of exhibits. After the tour, enjoy the public levels of the aquarium at a discounted admission price.
2:00 – 4:00pm – Behind-the-scenes tour of the Lake Superior Maritime Collections – Jim Dan Hill Library at the University of WI-Superior, 907 North 19th Street, Superior, WI
Join University of WI-Superior Library Archivist, Laura Jacobs, and members of her staff, for a special tour of the unique resources that tell the story of maritime history and activities relating to communications surrounding Lake Superior and the upper Great Lakes. Metered street parking is required.
2:00 – 4:00pm – Special guided tour of Superior Public Museums' historic Fairlawn Mansion – 906 East 2nd Street, Superior, WI
Step back in time and enjoy a tour of the historic 42-room mansion built in 1890, which overlooks the bay and Lake Superior. Recall the elegance and prosperity of Superior’s early boomtown days as well as the unique period as a children’s home. Gales of November attendees receive reduced admission, only $5 per person.
6:00 – 8:00pm – Gales of November Opening Gala Reception – Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center, 600 South Lake Avenue, Duluth, MN
Come join the fun and celebrate Great Lakes maritime history at the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center, located at the foot of the Aerial Lift Bridge in historic Canal Park. Gales of November attendees can pick up their name badges, enjoy a self-guided tour of the Marine Museum, and sample some good eats graciously provided by the evening’s reception sponsor, Lake Superior Magazine.
Saturday, November 8 – Tour Options:
11am – 3pm – Tour the R/V Blue Heron (weather permitting, docked behind the DECC)
The Blue Heron is the largest university-owned research vessel on the Great Lakes and is operated by University of Minnesota-Duluth's Large Lakes Observatory. The vessel conducts research and educational cruises that enable biologists, chemists, geologists and physicists to better understand the Great Lakes. The Blue Heron will be docked behind the DECC from 11am to 3pm for tours. Come aboard, meet the crew and learn more about the unique research vessel.
